The holidays are always a busy time of year; add to that a new distinction — Hawaii’s best pie shop — and the family-owned bakery is finding it can’t make pies fast enough.
On Monday, Yahoo Travel named the pies at Hawaiian Pie Co. the state’s best. The distinction has given the small bake shop no small amount of attention.
“It’s been crazy over here — nonstop. Doors popping, phones ringing,” said Drew Hori, operations manager.
When asked if the increased visibility has made things more stressful, Hori responded with a chuckle, “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t … but it’s good, it’s good stressful.”
Pies at the bakery come in a variety of flavors, and full-size pies. On any given day, there are three generations of Hori’s cranking them out.
“Sometimes we butt heads, but at the same time it’s great seeing my grandpa in here, just hanging out with my dad and my mom,” Drew Hori said.
With the solid foundation of family, the Hori’s didn’t need, or certainly expect the Yahoo honor. Still it’s made an impact. “It’s a great honor, definitely — and we’re definitely pleased.”
Want to try to grab one of Hawaii’s best pies? The Hawaiian Pie Co. will be open Thanksgiving Day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (But, you might want to call ahead to make sure they’ve got pies in stock.)
